Today Adaptec dumped their money loosing Snap Appliance division, once as much a mindshare leader in NAS as NetApp, to Overland Storage for $3.6 million after buying it just 4 years ago for $100 million.

Backup specialist Overland has bought Adaptecs Snap Server business in an attempt to gain a foothold in the SMB NAS market. The Snap Server deal, which is valued at just $3.6 million, is Overlands latest effort to beef up its traction with smaller enterprises following its de-dupe deal with Diligent, which was announced late last year.

This one caught me by surprise. I have been a fan of Adaptecs SNAP line of NAS heads since we tested them in our labs. Actually, we tested them twice two different generations and saw them improve consistently and blow the socks off of competitors in the same product levels.

Overland Storage Monday extended its reach into the NAS market with the acquisition of the Snap Server NAS business from Adaptec. Overland Storage paid $3.6 million in cash for the Snap Server brand and assets, with $2.1 million to be paid up front in cash and the remainder to be paid in 12 months.

A few months ago when I spoke to Jeff Graham, Overland Storage's Senior Product Manager, he indicated that Overland Storage was exploring the possibility of adding NAS as an option to its disk-based backup line. Based on this morning's announcement that it has acquired Adaptec's Snap Server NAS line of products, it is obvious that Overland Storage saw an even more urgent need to add NAS to its product portfolio than Jeff originally indicated.
